Before You Go

Created as part of my study abroad course, I designed a comprehensive pre-departure guide for travelers heading to Japan, with a special emphasis on preparing the mind and body for the adventure ahead. As a part of this guide, I aimed to not only provide practical travel tips but also address the emotional and psychological aspects of preparing for international travel, particularly focusing on anxiety and culture shock.

The design of the guide reflects a clean, calming aesthetic, using soft color palettes and simple typography to evoke a sense of ease and tranquility. The layout was intentionally minimalistic, allowing the content to stand out and be easily digestible for anxious travelers seeking both information and reassurance. I wanted the guide to feel approachable and supportive, like a helpful companion through the travel process.

This guide covers essential topics such as managing jet lag, preparing for cultural differences, and understanding the importance of sleep and nutrition while traveling. It also addresses the emotional aspect of travel, offering tips on managing anxiety before and during the trip. I validated feelings of discomfort and highlighted the normalcy of experiencing culture shock. My goal was to reassure travelers that it’s okay to feel anxious or overwhelmed, as these emotions are part of the travel experience.

I incorporated elements such as checklists, calming illustrations, and easy-to-read infographics to break down complex ideas into simple, actionable steps. These features were designed to help travelers prepare both mentally and physically, making the process feel less daunting.

The pre-departure guide offers a balance of practical travel advice and emotional support, ensuring that travelers feel confident and prepared as they embark on their journey to Japan. By addressing anxiety and culture shock head-on, the guide provides a holistic approach to travel preparation that considers both the mind and body, offering a sense of calm in the face of the unknown. This project allowed me to explore the intersection of design and emotional well-being, creating a resource that can be both informative and comforting for future travelers.
